Eagle Palms

Eagle Palms are advancement awards that are designed for Eagle Scouts to remain active in their troops, provide leadership, and continue specialized study through the merit badge program.

There are six requirements for earning an Eagle Palm:

1.     Be active in your troop and patrol for at least 3 months after earning Eagle, or after the award of the last Eagle Palm.

2.     Demonstrate Scout spirit by living the Scout Oath and Law in your everyday life.

3.     Make a satisfactory effort to develop and demonstrate leadership ability.

4.     Earn 5 additional merit badges beyond those required for Eagle or the last Palm. Merit badges may be earned at any time since becoming a Boy Scout to meet this requirement.

5.     Take part in a Scoutmaster conference. (Review potential Scoutmaster and board of review questions by clicking here.)

6.     Complete your board of review (held by the troop committee).

Scouts earn their Palms in succession:

·     Bronze Palm – Active at least 3 months and 5 more merit badges past the 21 required for Eagle (total of 26 merit badges).

·      Gold Palm – 3 more months and 5 more merit badges past those required for Bronze Palm (31 total).

·     Silver Palm – 3 more months and 5 more merit badges past those required for Gold Palm (36 total).

Additional Palms can be earned by repeating the sequence:

·         2nd Bronze Palm – 3 more months and 5 more merit badges past those required for Silver Palm (total of 41).

·         2nd Gold Palm – 3 more months and 5 more merit badges past those required for 2nd Bronze Palm (46 total).

·         2nd Silver Palm – 3 more months and 5 more merit badges past those required for 2nd Gold Palm (51 total) . . .

Note that a special Eagle Palm Application must be completed by the Scout and signed by his Scoutmaster and the chair of his Eagle Palm board of review. This application can be downloaded from: http://www.seascout.org/for_leaders/epalm.pdf.

The Scout then gives this completed application to the troop advancement chair, so the advancement chair can purchase the palm award at the Scout Shop.

Wearing Palms

Scouts may wear only the proper combination of Palms for the number of merit badges earned beyond the rank of Eagle. The Bronze Palm represents 5 merit badges, the Gold Palm 10, and the Silver Palm 15. For example:

·         If 10 merit badges have been earned beyond Eagle, wear only the Gold Palm (not both the Bronze and Gold Palms).

·         If 15 merit badges have been earned beyond Eagle, wear only the Silver Palm (not the Bronze, Gold and Silver Palms).

·         If 20 merit badges have been earned beyond Eagle, wear the Silver (15) and Bronze (5) Palms.

·         If 25 merit badges have been earned beyond Eagle, wear the Silver (15) and Gold (10) Palms.

Palms are worn affixed horizontally to the ribbon of the Eagle Scout medal or on the Eagle Scout badge. Adults can affix Palms to the Eagle Scout knot device.

Scouts cannot earn two or more Palms at one time. Even if a Scout has more than 5 additional merit badges to apply to a Palm, he must wait until the next 3 month period to apply them toward his next Palm.

Eagle Palms

True or false –

Merit badges required for Eagle Palms must be earned after the Scout has earned the Eagle Award.

False. Merit badges can be earned at any time since a Scout has joined the Boy Scouts of America.

More than one Eagle Palm can be earned during a single 3-month period after a Scout is awarded the rank of Eagle.

False. Only one Eagle Palm can be earned during a single 3-month period. One of the purposes of Eagle Palms is to reward Eagle Scouts both for their additional merit badges and their continued active participation in Scouting.

Eagle Scouts are encouraged to wear all of the Palms they’ve earned.

False. Only the proper combination of Palms should be worn that represent the correct number of merit badges the Scout has earned.

False. Additional merit badges are only one component of the requirement. Others are active participation in the patrol and troop, demonstrating Scout spirit, developing leadership, and taking part in a Scoutmaster conference and board of review.
