Troop 764 Scouting Times -- Volume 2, Issue 2 -- Summer, 1999

SEABASE 1999

The time has come! This summer three crews from our troop will sail out of Islamorada on 41 foot Morgans. All crews have been training very hard for the past few months and are finally ready to get on their way. Our training consisted of sailing two boats out at Lake Allatoona for a period of two days. In these two days we learned the sailing knots, how to work the helm, how to tie the jib and sail, and most of all to have fun.

There will be two different dates in which the 3 crews will be going. On July 6, Crew 1 will depart for Sea Base and will return on July 13. Members of Crew 1 are: Gary W., Denis D., Dan S., Jordan W., Brian D., Matt F., Bradley S., and Eric R.

On August 9, Crews 2 and 3 will depart and will be returning on August 16. Members of Crew 2 are: Tim M., Earl O., Phil G., Ross M., Scott O., Justin C., Michael S., and Peter S. Members of Crew 3 are: Richard H., Jim S., Tom F., Charlie D., Ted F., Kyle H., Brent H., and Adam S.

I will also take this time to mention the terrific t-shirt design by Kyle Hale. We would like to thank all the adults and Scouts who have helped to make this 1999 Sea Base trip a success!

Summer Camp Shakedown Meeting

Parents of Scouts attending summer camp in July! All of you should have turned in the forms and fees for summer camp to Mr. Spangler. Parents are required to attend the Shakedown Meeting, Monday, June 28, at 7:30pm. Come and ask questions. Find out what your son needs for a great week of adventure.

Justin and the Flying Clouds Prep for Sea Base!

Sea Base Crews 2 & 3 went to the Allatoona Aquatics Base on May 21-23 to prepare for their Sea Base adventure in August.

We had 11 Scouts (Justin, Ted F., Matt F., Phil, Brent, Kyle, Ross, Scott, Peter, Michael Sa. and Adam), along with Messrs. Fischgrund, Munro, Owens, Strange and Hale.

Everyone passed the morning swim test before heading out for a great day of sailing. Our crews were on three boats -- Das Boot (18'), Starwind (20') and Flying Cloud (24'). Troop 115 went out on the Commodore (26').

After learning some basic sailing skills we spent the day tacking and racing. We had incredible winds during an afternoon thunderstorm which worked us really hard. Several times the wind pushed the boats horizontal to the water. At day's end there were a bunch of crusty old salts ready to do the on land training where we showed off the things we had learned during the day.

The winds were great on Saturday, but weren't so cooperative on Sunday. The lack of wind forced us to put our new skills to the test. All of the captains on our boats were great instructors and were very patient with their less than competent crews.

Many of the Scouts called this the "most awesome" weekend trip our troop has ever done.

Many kudos to Ted F. and his dad for putting together this wonderful trip. Ted did a great job as grubmaster. Meals were well-planned, tasty, and bountiful. They also required very little fuss and muss leaving more time for fun. Thanks Ted!

Troop 764 Shines at First Annual Hightower Trail District Banquet

Troop 764 was well represented at the Hightower Trail District Banquet held Friday, May 21, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Tucker. The new Trailblazer Award was presented to Mr. Igleheart for his incredible dedication to the completion of our Scout Hut, as well as his other contributions. Mr. Owens was acknowledged for his work with both the troop and Cub Pack 764. Mr. Porwoll earned the award for his tireless work as a unit commissioner and troop leader. Troop 764 was the only unit to have three individuals earn Trailblazer recognition!

Also, recognized from the troop were recent Eagle Scouts, Matt P., Kyle and Justin. Congratulations Scouts!

See the complete list of Hightower Trail District award winners -- pictures too! Your troop leaders at their best.

Arrow of Light and Crossover Ceremony

If you didn't camp at Bert Adams April 16-18 you missed the perfect weekend! Weatherwise it could never be any better. Thanks Justin!

Also, we crossed over the Webelos Scouts from Pack 764. It was the best Arrow of Light and Crossover ceremony I have ever witnessed. With Lake Campbell shimmering through the trees, as the sun set in the background, it was an awe inspiring sight. The Arrow of Light and Crossover ceremony team from Tella Qualla Boundary Chapter of OA Egwa Tawa Dee Lodge #129, which included our own Kyle H. (and Mr. Porwoll as adviser), did a magnificent job. Everyone left with goosebumps. This was one of those moments that can never be adequately described to others.

OA SR-6 Conclave at Bert Adams

The same weekend as the crossover the OA SR-6 Conclave was held at Bert Adams. There was team competition among the Ordeal and Brotherhood ceremony teams. TQB with Matt P. finished first in the Brotherhood competition, while Scott O. was on the second place Ordeal team.

Congratulations to both of these Scouts and their teams for an outstanding effort! Next up is nationals in Knoxville, TN, next year (August 6-10, 2000).

Troop Serves Strawberry Shortcake at Men's Breakfast on May 8

Once a year the proceeds from the St. Luke's Men's Breakfast are earmarked for Troop 764. The Scouts prepare the food, setup, serve and clean up after the breakfast.

Under the guidance of chef extraordinaire, Brid Igleheart, the Scouts made pancakes for themselves, then prepared a scrumptious strawberry shortcake feast for the regular attendees.

Generous donations resulted in net proceeds for the troop of over $600! Earlier the Scouts had decided to give half of the money to Cleveland Craddock, custodian at St. Luke's. Cleveland recently graduated from Liberty University and is planning to go to seminary school. Hopefully this small token of our appreciation will help repay him for all the Scout mess he has had to deal with over the years.

The 14 Scouts in attendance were: Austin, Jordan, Justin, Kyle, Brent, Ted S., Brad D., Brian, Phil, Matt F., Scott, Mitchell O., Matt P. and Brad Mc.

These Scouts should be extremely proud of themselves. The troop leadership has received numerous comments about how well behaved and courteous they were throughout the breakfast. Thanks for a job well done -- give yourselves a pat on the back!

Adults participating were: Brid & Tricia Igleheart, Denis DuBois, Gary Wright, Paul Porwoll, Steve French, and Earl Owens.

Thanks to everyone who helped out -- especially those who were there for the entire 3 hours!

Troop Attends Great Camporee!

On May 2 & 3 the troop attended the Salute to George Washington Encampment at Bert Adams. Scouts Austin, Scott, Matt P., Matt F. and Mitchell O. joined together as the provisional Pedro Patrol for the patrol competition. Leaders were Messrs. French, Owens and Porwoll. Some of the events included lighting fires with a match and a hatchet, throwing tomahawks, rifle shooting, archery, canoeing, code encryption, water cannons and best of all -- war bats! Even though severely outnumbered in War Bats, Troop 764 showed what it is made of as Scott fought off five members of another patrol for the victory.

The Golden Axe Relay was the highlight event with a relay style fire building and cooking competition.

The evening campfire was the Order of the Arrow tap out ceremony. This was a very emotional and introspective event. Austin and Mr. French were among 50 OA candidates tapped out. Torches coming across the lake in canoes, OA members in Native American regalia and a full moon rising over the trees served to enhance an already solemn sight.

On Sunday we participated in a lively and very competitive ultimate frisbee game on Gorman Field. At the closing ceremony over 40 handmade plaques were awarded to the top patrols.

Overall this was one of our best outings of the year. Those of you not attending missed a memorable activity!

See the patch & pictures!

Dreshers Donate Piano to Troop

Thanks to Don and Beth Dresher of St. Luke's for their generous donation of a Rudolph upright piano to the troop on May 31. Maybe now we can learn a few Scout songs -- if only we knew how to sing.

Those helping to move the piano were Scouts Adam and Scott, and Messrs. DuBois, French, Strange and Owens.

Thank you Dreshers!

Troop Sells Almost 3,000 Bales of Pinestraw, Saturday, March 21!

Mr. Wright did a fantastic job. Our first year results exceeded expectations. Everyone had a great time and we are looking forward to next year.

Thanks to Mr. Wright for all your time and effort!

Scouting For Food Drive Ends

The troop collected 172 cans/boxes of food during the recent Scouting for Food campaign. This food was donated to the Dunwoody Community Action Center on May 10.

The nine Scouts participating and earning a special patch were:

Michael Sch. (top collector with 55 cans), Austin, Nick, Bradley S., Ted S., Scott, Mitchell O., Brad D. and Justin.

Thank you for giving of yourselves and to the community!

June 20, 1999: Summer Edition

Editor's Note:
This is the last issue of Scouting Times to be published by the Timms, as Stephen has resigned from the Troop. We have found publishing the newsletter to be a great way to stay in touch with what is going on. However, Mr. Owens has done a superb job bringing the new Web site on-line.

This, our last newsletter, is pulled mainly directly from the web site. Please point your browser to www.bigfoot.com/~troop764. The site contains a longer range calendar and great material from Philmont. Check it out! We wish the troop the best of luck. The quality leadership and the caring involvement of all the parents has made this Troop very special to us. We thank all of you for working with Stephen.

Mrs. and Mr. Timm
